My Worldview

This is a super basic run down of my personal worldview. It doesn’t get into details it just leaves a general framework of what I believe to be true.

What is prime reality?

  • The God spoken of in the Bible is prime reality.
  • The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are all equally God

What is the nature of external reality, that is, the world around us?

  • The world around us was created by God speaking it into existence
  • External reality was created to be orderly and under God’s dominion
  • It is man’s job to take care of the world around us

What is a human being?

  • A human being is created in the image of God
  • A human also has dominion over God’s creation (but it should be noted that God rules over man and holds ultimate power over creation)
  • A human has a sinful nature (because of the Fall)

What happens to a person at death?

  • At death a human’s spirit is then judged by God on whether they will go to Heaven (and spend eternity with God in paradise) or go to Hell (eternally suffering in a place without God)
  • A person goes to Heaven if they have faith and truly believe that Jesus lived a perfect life for them and did not sin yet took their punishment and died and rose again, defeating death

Why is it possible to know anything at all?

  • Humans are made in the image of God who knows all things
  • As a reflection of God, we do not know everything but we do have the ability to know

How do we know what is right and wrong?

  • Again God is the ultimate judge of what is right and wrong
  • What is pleasing to God is right while what is considered to be against God is considered wrong

What is the meaning of human history?

  • The meaning of human history is to see our definite need for an all-powerful and all-knowing God
  • Teach us how to be faithful to God and what it looks like

What personal, life-orienting core commitments are consistent with this worldview?

  • Love one another (each person created in the image of God)
  • Follow Jesus and become more Christ-like
  • Trusting in God

Naturalism

Jurassic Park

Well I can finally say I have watched Jurassic Park. The plotline holds an evolutionary worldview. Nature holds the supreme power in the universe.  Yet, science can try to control nature, but eventually “Life found a way”.

There are many evolutionary references throughout the movie. One of the most prominent ideas is that life can’t be contained or controlled. The scientists bred the dinosaurs to only be female, yet Alan and the kids found nests of dinosaur eggs. Evolutionary forces work with whatever they are given and learn how to thrive and sustain in an environment.

Also, it is considered common facts in the movies that dinosaurs actually evolved into birds not mammals. The way the dinosaurs move in packs is very similar to the ways of a bird. However, birds do not hunt in packs like the dinosaurs did in Jurassic Park. It is common for other species of animals to hunt in packs yet birds do not have this trait.

The scientific flaws in Jurassic Park are only noticeable to a trained eye. In researching the validity or lack of for the movie, many articles point out the scientific flaws of the movie. The whole basis of the DNA cloning, the blood found in a prehistoric mosquito. Is in fact fake. Due to time and the weathering that comes along with it, scientists have been able to extract DNA from a mosquito but it was the mosquito’s DNA not that of the animal it bit.

With that, there is the issue of using frog DNA to fill in the gaps missing in the dinosaur DNA. It is impossible to know what the missing information would be in the DNA chains. Therefore a guessing game would be costly and pointless.

Naturalism

So then it must be answered what is naturalism? Naturalism is “defined most briefly as the philosophical conclusion that the only reality is nature“. All conclusions within naturalistic philosophy are determined based off of scientific research and basic human reasoning. Naturalists claim to base their beliefs solely off of scientific studies by avoiding traditions and supernatural beliefs.

Nature holds the highest power. It works within itself to continuously produce a better and improved version of itself. There is no background force driving time forward.

Humans are a part of this nature and are real with only matter. There is no soul or spirit according to a naturalist. Rather instead conscious thoughts are just chemical responses within the brain. Without a soul, no part of a human exists after death. However, humans were caused.

“Each of us is an unfolding natural process, and every aspect of that process is caused, and is a cause itself. So we are fully caused creatures, and seeing just how we are caused gives us power and control, while encouraging compassion and humility.”

Each human is believed to have been caused while also being a cause.  The whole process of cause is the cause of the process (as confusing as that is).

Existence of God

So naturalists  believe that humans were caused. That’s great! However, as I read through many websites, they all talked about how everything was caused. Naturally if something were caused, the question of what the very first cause comes up. As I researched I could not find anything talking about what the first cause was that set everything into motion.

There is of course the Big Bang Theory, but studies (not even necessarily Christian studies) are showing that the quantum physics behind the Big Bang Theory make it impossible. Those studies argue that the universe potentially had no beginning, or first cause.

But then if everything is caused the cycle eventually reaches a point where there has to be a beginning cause. This also infers that the  first cause must be “uncaused” and eternal.

This brings up the cosmological argument that there must be a first cause. As Christians, this first cause is God “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). He created something out of nothing (enveloping the idea of ex nihilo).

Also, when God created the earth, He did not create it by planting seeds and laying eggs. Rather the earth was created to look as if it had been there long enough to be considered a mature and inhabitable planet  “And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food” (Genesis 2:9a). As a result of this, the earth cannot be aged according to scientific studies. Even if a tree was found that was created by God in the beginning, the number of rings it has versus the number of years it had existed would be totally different.

There is a need for a God to exist. He is the first cause that set all causes into motion. He has the ultimate power and can rule over nature and its laws because he created them.

Subtly Deist

deism

“God gave us reason not religion” One of the most basic beliefs in the “religion” of deism. It is this sentence that greets readers of www.deist.com as it is positioned directly  under the creators’ official title “World Union of Deists”.

But why should we, as Christians, care about deism and what it is?

Deism has subtly crept into the background of daily life. It is now considered the fastest growing religion in the world. Yet people would not deliberately say they are deist. When asked what religion they believed in, they rarely mention deism but when people were asked what their worldview looked like it had eerily similar to deistic beliefs. (For more info on the study)

So then what is deism?

Deism is theoretically a religion based on reason. It is believed to be the happy medium where religion and reason can work together in harmony. Deists believe that there is a god who created the universe but is now no longer involved with his creation. What sets deism apart from other religions is the fact that deism does not allow for spiritual “revelations”. According to a deist, there is only reason and that reasoning can be discovered through the scientific study of the world around us. There is no holy text for the deist belief.

In briefly answering the 8 worldview questions, it is possible to better understand the deist religion and how to properly respond.

  1. What is prime reality? Deists believe there is a god who set the universe into motion and now lets it run itself.
  2. What is the nature of external reality? The world around us was created and can be better understood through scientific observation
  3. What is a human being? Humans are intelligent beings who chose what is morally right by using their own reasoning.
  4. What happens to a person after death? A deist openly admits they don’t know what happens to a person after death (they claim other religions use death as a fear tactic and that they trust their god to take care of whatever happens after death)
  5. Why is it possible to know anything at all? It is believed that correct reasoning can be found through successful scientific study and observation
  6. How do we know what is right and wrong? Again deism is focused on reasoning and therefore a person uses their innate sense of reasoning to determine right from wrong
  7. What is the meaning of human history? Deists can use studies from the past to help them learn more and gain better understanding of the world around them in order to help develop their reasoning.
  8. What personal, life orienting core commitments are consistent with this worldview? Deism is a fully personal religion. There is no need for a leader, or holy text, or even a church. Deists also only pray in thanksgiving not in request as they cannot dictate their god’s ruling.

How has deism crept into our daily lives?

So then how has this belief that there is a god who created but is no longer involved with his creation, snuck into daily society. Many media outlets and famous leaders have laid out deistic beliefs in front of the common everyday people to feed off of. Deistic thoughts are slowly saturating the world around us yet nobody even realizes it! People accept there is a god but then after that, not much thinking goes into who he is or what he does. The movie “Hugo” personifies deistic beliefs. Hugo the boy watches from the clock tower into a world around him filled with moving parts that all work together to create a larger mechanism. There are no miracles and everything has a perfect explanation for why it is the way it is. The same can be found in the song “From a Distance”. Considered a rather popular song (and by some even a Christian song) Bette Middler sings of a perfect world where god is watching from a distance. Everything works out as planned and “from a distance” everything is perfect.

How are we supposed to respond as Christians?

So then what do we do as Christians? This is the world’s fastest growing religion so how can one point out the flaws of deistic beliefs?

Well, deists believe god created a perfect universe and therefore no longer needs to intervene. It is true God did create a perfect universe, (Genesis 1:1) however sin has brought darkness and evil into his creation so it is no longer perfect and does need God’s intervention. For Christians, that is why God sent his Son Jesus so that “we shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

For a deist, reasoning cannot know what happens at death so there is little hope for a deist after death but as Christians, we know the hope and joy of eternity spent with God.

Creation

The thought of creation truly blows my mind. I mean ex nihilo or creating something from nothing just leaves my head spinning. There are so many questions about creation yet there are no first hand accounts of the beginning of the world which leaves us in the dark searching for answers. Who created creation? What did the process of creation look like? How old is the Earth?
Who Created Creation?
To be a creation, the created must have a creator. The first verse of the Bible states “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). It starts right at the beginning, that is of creation for God has no beginning and no end. Genesis 1:1 is kind of like a staple verse in the Christian faith. It starts the whole story in motion. As the story continues on throughout the Bible the New Testament writer John reminds the readers of this beginning creation.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:1-3)
The Christian faith clearly states its belief that God created the world and all of creation. It was not just God the Father at the beginning of creation. All three parts of the Trinity played a vital role in the formation of creation. How did God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all contribute? God spoke creation into being (Genesis 1:1). Jesus or the Word completed what God said (John 1:1-3). And finally the Holy Spirit “energized” creation. Therefore each part of the Trinity had an equally important responsibility in setting creation into motion and creating it out of nothing.
What did This Process Look Like?
There are so many different accounts of what people think creation was like. The three most prominent views of creation are creation science, scientific views, and theistic evolution. Creation science is as the Bible tells where God created the world throughout the course of 6 consecutive 24 hour days. The scientific view believes that the world has and is continuously evolving. Finally, theistic evolution is kind of the view that tries to tie both creation science, and the scientific views together. Essentially theistic evolution thinks that God used evolution or watched over the process of evolution to create the world and everything within it.
The fight against the creation account is blatantly obvious almost everywhere. Schools teach evolution because it is supposedly scientifically accurate. The Biblical creation account is thrown out the window and mention of it is shamed. However, there is no evidence of evolutionary processes. Species today are not evolving and changing into new forms. Plus when looking into the intricate design of creation, there is astonishing details. The factors of energy and atoms and molecules all working together to create something bigger that functions properly all point to the need for a creator with great care and consideration for details.
The Bible spells out every detail of creation. God tells his people how he created the earth and the stars surrounding it. Genesis 1 holds the whole account of the six days of creation. A lot of information is packed into the chapter but it gets the ball rolling and time ticking. The days in creation are determined by the fact that there was an evening and there was a morning. That is the general definition of a day. Each day contained a different part of creation each needing the previous day[s] work in order to exist. God started with light and separated it from the darkness in order to create a night and day. Then God separated the water from the sky. On the next day he split the water and created land. After these days it was then possible to create plants and vegetation the next day. Then God created the sun, moon, and stars. Now that the earth was habitable, the next two days were used to create birds, fish, and animals. And finally, on the sixth day, God created Adam to take care of the world God had created.
The account of creation proves itself possible in the order in which God created and the fact that God is over all and above all and not limited by anything. Because of this, He has the power to create a world as intricately and precisely designed as the one in which we live.
How Old is the Earth?
Creation looked as though it had been there for ages. The trees were tall, the animals were matured, and Adam was a man, not a baby. Therefore, this leaves the answer to the age of the earth rather confusing and difficult. Carbon dating contains errors due to outside factors that affect the dating. This makes the true dating of the earth difficult. However, things like the Grand Canyon in the flood. The flood that took 40 days and 40 nights made a canyon that looked to be millions of years old. I can’t say I know everything about the age of the earth (or even close to everything) but after researching the evidence for a young earth seems to be more convincing than that of an old earth.
